Hi all--
Recently my defense of the film AVATAR against the ever-more absurd attacks on the film was published in the FREDERICKSBURG FREE LANCE-STAR and also picked up by the McLachy newspaper chain, which syndicated it all over the country. Which is why I received e-mails from places as far flung as Juneau AK and Miami FL on the piece.
Several of you e-mailed me to say that you were unable to get it in print or on
line - so here's a copy of the full story.
I will also post it on the DouglasBrode.com web-site.

Hello--
My latest op-ed piece for THE FREDERICKSBURG FREE LANCE-STAR appeared on Saturday 1/30/2010.
In it, I deal with the attacks on James Cameron's film AVATAR, which has been accused of being "pro-environmental" and "anti-religion."
You should be able to read my defense of the film by googling the newspaper, then pulling up the Op/ed page on their homesite.
My story will also be offered to the McLachy newspaper chain, so likely it'll pop up in various newspapers in cities around the country, as my previous pieces for the LANCE-STAR have.
AND, an upcoming radio appearance - I'll be on the Charlie and Ernie Show from Colchester this coming Wednesday morning, 8:10 Eastern time to in part discuss this article.
Wherever you happen to live, you can listen in by going to Newstalk620wvmt.com on your computer..
Hope all is well with you and yours during these winter months - we are in sunny San Antone.

Hello All -
A couple of upcoming events I wanted to let you know about:
1) Today, Saturday, August 22, I'll be a guest on the Jake Hartford radio show, which originates in Chicago on station wcpt. We'll be talking about the ZONE book and wherever else the day takes us. Scheduled live air time for various time zones is 11 a.m. NY time, 10 a.m. Chicago time, eight a.m. California time. Now, it's a local Chicago radio show, not syndicated; but if you care to listen you can do so online while it is broadcast live. Simply go to www.wcpt.com to hear us.
2) It's official! And how I've been wanting to announce this for months, though I couldn't until just now. I've heard from the people at Walt Disney World, Florida special events office, and it's a go -- I'll be signing books at the gift shop at the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror attraction on Oct. 2, the precise fiftieth anniversary of The Twilight Zone's premiere on CBS. In fact, it's actually a Friday, the same day of the week that the show originally played. How cool is that? The precise times have not yet been set, and that will be decided by the people at Disney. I'll let you know more specifics as soon as they tell me. But if you happen to live in Florida, or if you are planning an autumn trip there, I'd love to see as many old friends as possible. It will be at the Disney-MGM movie park.

Hello, all
Some upcoming information on two major events . . .
1) Tuesday, August 11:
This is the date that all Zone/Serling fans have beeneagerly anticipating - the United States Postal Stamp commemorating Rod and his great gifts as a writer willbe given its first day of issue - and the ceremony will be held in Binghamton NY, where Rod grew up after his family moved there from Syracuse when he was still a child. All those small hometowns in the great ZONE episodes are inspired by Binghamton. I've been invited by the U.S. post office to attend all the events and sign books at them. The day will begin at the FORUM THEATRE (236 Washington St.) I'm scheduled to be there to meet and greet people at ten a.m. There will be various radio stations and other media present doing radio trivia tests and that sort of thing. Should be a great deal of fun. The events will start promptly at 10:30 a.m. run until around twelve noon. Then there will be a brief lunch break. At approximately one p.m., I'm scheduled to be at the post office, once again greeting fans of Rod and signing books - I should be there until about three or three thirty p.m. The final event will be at the Riverread bookstore in Binghamton, located at 5 Court St. At seven p.m., I'll be giving a (free, of course!) presentation that I think you will enjoy if you can make it. I'm going to show
the first ever episode of ZONE, "Where is Everybody?" it's considered a classic, but Rod was never happy with his script, and while it was filming he was constantly trying to figure out "what was missing" - the extra "bit" that would give his story the final "kick" that it required. on the night when it ran - Oct. 2, 1959, Rod was watching and, as he watched, IT HIT HIM - he knew just what he SHOULD have added. But it was too late, of course - the film was 'in the can,' and that was that.
However, he would apply the lesson that he learned to all future Zone scripts. I'm one of the few people he ever told as to what that missing ingredient was, and in a discussion with everyone who attends, I'll reveal it. Think you'll have fun. Any books that we still have left from the earlier sales can be purchased and autographed then, but the event itself is of course free of charge.
2) Wednesay, August 12:
I'm scheduled to be a guest once again on the Dennis Miller National Radio Show. Dennis begins the show each morning from L.A. at eight a.m. live, and I'm currently scheduled to be the first guest, though the line-up can always change. (and if some important news story should break, don't be surprised if I get bumped to a later date, though as of right now we're all set to go.) This means I'll be on the air live some time shortly after ten a.m. Texas time and eleven a.m. New York time. We're scheduled to talk about a host of things, including the previous day's post office stamp ceremony, "The Robert De Niro Story" that I did for The Biography Channel, and a preview of the upcoming Disney film with the first ever Disney African-American princess. We'll get into some of my other upcoming books too hopefully if time allows. Do note that in some cities/markets in America, the show is broadcast live, but in others it is taped and played at different hours. Check your local listings. Also, if you miss the show, or if it is not carried in your market but you want to hear it, do recall that this is the Internet era, so you can always go to Dennis Miller Radio on the Internet any time after that, as it will be stored there for playback.
Looking ahead to next month:
The several hours of interviews that the BBC-Radio recently did with me by intercontinental hook up are being edited and will be ready for broadcast sometime in Sept. In England, they will of course be broadcast there at a specific time. In America (and the world) they will be available on the Internet, the BBC site. I'll let you know as soon a they are scheduled to be operational.
Then in October, of course, it's the next book - SHOOTING STARS OF THE SMALL SCREEN: TV WESTERN ACTORS FROM HOPALONG CASSIDY TO DEADWOOD, with a foreword by my other (in addition to Rod) lifelong hero, Fess Parker, from university of texas press, Austin.

HELLO ALL
"The Robert De Niro Story," a new film which I worked on with the people at The Biography Channel, is now scheduled to appear regularly on their TV Channel internationally.
In fact, an old friend I passed on the street the other day mentioned that he'd already seen it last week on TV.
The only upcoming date that I have now for its scheduled appearance will be this coming Sunday. It is scheduled for broadcast over the Biography Channel at noon, Eastern time. Of course, there can always be last minute changes, but this will most likely be the next air date, with more to follow. Additional dates will of course be on their program listings 'crawl.'
So it should also run this Sunday at 11 a.m. Texas time, and 9 a.m. California time as well.
I contributed to the writing/information on Bobby and I am also seen onscreen, albeit briefly! PLEASE don't e-mail me to tell me how horrible I look - I already know. My plane arrived very late in NYC for the taping and I had no time to get myself together once I reached the studio before we started shooting.
Besides, I was having a bad hair day, not that I have all that much hair left. But what there is was . . .
ah, you get the picture.
best to all!

Hello to . . .
Old friends, current colleagues, former students, business contacts and as Yul Brynner (as The King) used to say . . .
etcetera, etcetera, etcetera . . .
Hope this finds all well with you and yours.
First, thanks to absolutely everyone for the AMAZING support on Rod Serling and The Twilight Zone: The Fifiteth Anniversary Tribute by Carol Serling and myself, from Barricade Books.
We have enjoyed considerable success with it since publication in January, it continues to hold its own on Amazon.com, and publisher Carol Stuart reports that there were very few returns from bookstores.
Again, thank you.
Just a quick note to let you know that my next book is already listed on Amazon. It's SHOOTING STARS OF THE SMALL SCREEN: ENCYCLOPEDIA OF TV WESTERN ACTORS. The hero of my (our?) youth, Fess Parker (Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett) was kind enough to write the foreword and Harry Carey Jr. ("Dobe") also contributed a wonderful comment on the work.
My lifelong love of the Western genre, or at least its TV element, is expressed in the book from University of Texas Press, Austin. I'm hard at work for my next book for them, DREAM WEST, about theatrical western films.
Below you will find a website for the current book. I think you'll find it fun. We have rare photos from not only the TV shows themselves but also title cards from memorable series and even a few forgotten ones.
There's a tough trivia test and, if you'd like to catch a fairly recent shot of me with my beloved Grandson Ty (to whom the book is dedicated) simply press on the "author" slot at the top.
www.TVshootingstars.com
The book itself will be out Oct. 15. On the Website you can also learn how to get the book at 1/3 off the cover price during the pre-publication period, either directly from UofTPress or on Amazon.
Also you might want to check out the website for my next upcoming book, YELLOW ROSE OF TEXAS: THE MYTH OF EMILY MORGAN. This will be my first (with a little luck of many!) graphic novels for McFarland.
I've had the great good luck of teaming with Joe Orsak, an amazingly gifted illustrator, who brings it all to llife. This book will present the woman behind the song, the story behind the woman . . . of a great African-American hero of mine.
www.yellowrosegraphicnovel.com
That book is scheduled for early in 2010, hopefully in time for African-American history month.
The ZONE website remains in place, as does my personal one.
Would love to hear from each and every one of you personally - simply send me a return e-mail to: dougbrode@msn.com
Let's grow old with dignity!!!
(recent students can ignore the above statement - college chums will know just what I mean)
